Each morning, at the school entrance, the arrival of children conceals a fundamental educational reality: every child arrives carrying, in addition to their school bag, an “invisible backpack”.

Within it, they unconsciously bring everything they experience at home—joys, tensions, changes in routine, or deeper family transitions. In early childhood, this load is almost always disproportionate to the words the child has at their disposal to describe it.

Educational science is unequivocal: socio-emotional development presupposes an environment of safety and predictability. Yet theory is consistently borne out in practice. Through my many years in the classroom, I have learned that a child will always find a way to “show” what they cannot say. After decades of daily observation, I know well that when their backpack becomes heavy, its contents inevitably manifest within the classroom. A sudden withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, or an outburst of anger are not signs of “misbehaviour”; rather, they are the child’s attempt to manage internal pressure. They constitute a silent appeal for understanding—one that only experience can decode in a timely manner.

At this point, the relationship between parent and educator ceases to be a formal acquaintance and becomes a vital bridge. As educators, we possess the tools to interpret the signals a child emits; however, our intervention remains incomplete without meaningful collaboration with the family. Communication from the parents’ side is not merely the provision of information, nor is it an “exposure” of family privacy. It is an act of educational responsibility and trust. It enables us to align our perspective with yours, so that we may understand the “why” behind a change—not with judgement, but with readiness to provide the appropriate supportive framework.

When home and school function as allies, the child perceives a unified line of support. This sense of coherence reduces anxiety and allows them to channel their energy where it truly belongs: in discovery and creation. Our aim is to build a relationship that lightens the child’s “backpack”, offering them the reassurance that the significant adults in their life are working together for their balance and well-being. For, ultimately, whatever we fail to discuss with one another, the child will be compelled to “voice” alone, in their search for the stability they need.

In an era filled with challenges, social change and uncertainty, we often search for solutions to the problems we face as a society. The essential and timeless antidote to every form of crisis is Education. And Education begins at home.
Education is not limited to academic knowledge. It is not only about books and grades. It is about values, critical thinking, respect, responsibility, empathy and the ability to cooperate. All these are first cultivated within the family, in the environment where a child takes their first steps in life.

The home is the first “school”. It is there that a child learns to communicate, to share, to listen and to express their views. They learn to take responsibility, to face difficulties and to persevere in achieving their goals. The example set by parents is the most powerful form of guidance.

School then comes to strengthen and structure this foundation. It provides knowledge, develops skills and shapes active and responsible citizens. Meaningful education, however, is built upon collaboration.

At our school, we believe that a close relationship between family and school is a fundamental prerequisite for our pupils’ progress. We promote continuous communication, open dialogue and cooperation with parents, with the shared aim of supporting the children’s holistic development.

In times of crisis, investing in Education is the most stable and meaningful choice. When family and school move forward together, strong foundations are built, trust is cultivated and the younger generation is empowered.

Change begins with each one of us. At home. At school. Through the values we pass on every day. Education is the foundation of a better tomorrow.

It is a unique educational opportunity filled with play, creativity, and meaningful learning for preschool children.Through carnival activities, children develop skills related to knowledge acquisition, social interaction, emotional intelligence, and psychomotor development.

Creativity and Imagination
Creating carnival costumes and masks, as well as participating in dramatic play, enhances children’s imagination. Through role play, children express emotions and experiment with different characters in a safe and supportive environment.

Social and Emotional Development
Group activities strengthen cooperation, communication, and empathy. Children learn to share, take turns, and respect others, while at the same time experiencing the joy of being part of a team.

Psychomotor Development, Role Play and Emotions
Activities that combine movement, dance, and role play help children coordinate their bodies, develop spatial awareness, and improve physical perception.
During role play, children express emotions such as joy, fear, excitement, or anger through their movements, body posture, and voice. In this way, they learn to recognize, express, and manage their emotions, while at the same time enhancing their self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-confidence.

Language and Cognitive Development
Stories, songs, and carnival-themed games enrich children’s vocabulary and strengthen their language expression. At the same time, imaginative thinking, idea organization, and creative problem-solving skills are cultivated.

Why Carnival in Kindergarten Matters
Carnival is much more than a simple celebration. It is a holistic educational experience that promotes creativity, social development, language growth, psychomotor progress, and emotional maturity in children.
With proper pedagogical use, this period becomes filled with meaning, smiles, and meaningful learning.

A unique artistic journey was completed this year in our nursery school, offering children the opportunity to explore the magical world of Art through experiential and creative activities.

Our young pupils travelled through the history of art, exploring important artistic movements. Their journey began with Ancient Egyptian Art, continued with the Renaissance masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci , discovered the bold expressions of Vincent van Gogh , explored the innovations of Pablo Picasso , and reached modern Pop Art. This allowed them to see how art evolves and reflects each historical period.

During the programme, the children became familiar with these great artists, observed iconic masterpieces such as Mona Lisa , Starry Night , and The Scream , and experimented with different techniques, materials, and artistic expression. Through the creative process, they developed their imagination, aesthetic awareness, observation skills, and self-confidence.

The project culminated in an afternoon creative workshop, where the children presented the artwork they had produced throughout the programme to their parents. With great enthusiasm, they took on the role of young guides, sharing their knowledge and creative journey, while parents and children participated together in artistic activities.

This experience highlighted the importance of art as a powerful tool for learning, creative expression, and collaboration, while also strengthening the connection between school and family and creating meaningful and joyful moments of inspiration.

Babies gain a rich sensory experience through sucking, placing objects in their mouths and manipulating them. In this way they also learn about weight, size, shape, texture, sound and smell.

A baby’s concentration and focus in a treasure basket can sometimes take up to an hour! The contents of the basket stimulate a baby’s curiosity and allow them to discover objects through first-hand experiences.

The baby also enjoys independent decision making as he/she is involved in selecting objects. During treasure play, adults should be attentive and close to the baby, without necessarily interfering, except to ensure safety and maintain social contact with them.

Items in the treasure baskets should be washed or cleaned with a cloth after each use or be discarded / replaced.

We introduce treasure baskets at 6 months of age when babies can either work / explore them on their own or with the help of some back support.

You can either choose items with the same theme e.g. metal objects found in the kitchen or randomly mixed objects.

Below is a plethora of treasure baskets from The Laughing House nursery who has been developing fantastic ‘treasure baskets’ for many years!

S.T.E.M. appears at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA and is based on the development of life, economy and competition for jobs. Its main objective was to improve competitiveness in the fields of science and technological development and it was believed that the competitiveness of a country must be based on a strong education system that prepares innovative scientists and engineers.

We are entering the 21st century, with scientific and technological innovations having created many challenges and new technological conditions for which students need to develop the competences and skills offered by S.T.E.M. (Van Laar et al., 2017). In the 21st century, therefore, we should have the so-called “21st century skills”: collaboration, communication, research, problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and adaptability.

But why so much talk about S.T.E.M. in education and why should we bother with S.T.E.M.? The nature of education is directly dependent on social, economic, political and cultural needs. If one asks oneself, what kind of education system we need and how we should organize the educational program, one has to explore: which citizen and which worker we will need tomorrow (Zdybel et al. 2019). Therefore, adaptation in the 21st century will come with the acquisition of skills, the creation of new knowledge and with transformation and flexibility.

From S.T.E.M. to S.T.E.A.M.

S.T.E.A.M., as we say Science. Science, is about an exploratory context where children will develop scientific thinking. We always start with a question that will motivate the children, that will be meaningful to them, that will be directly related to real life, to their experiences. To promote the inquiry methodology we follow a specific order: Question, Hypothesis, Observation, Experiment/Test, Recording, Result, Conclusion. Among scientific topics that can be exploited are thermal phenomena: evaporation, melting, freezing, evaporation, biological concepts and phenomena, magnetism, air, etc.

S.T.E.A.M., as we call Technology. In the kindergarten curriculum, technology appears as ICT. They start with the introduction to the E.Y., the different technological tools, continue with communication through technology and we come to a unit entitled: “Investigation, experimentation, discovery and problem solving using ICT”. Among the topics proposed in the curriculum, there is educational robotics, starting in 1980 by Papert, who created the programming language logo (Komis, 2004).

S.T.E.A.M., as in Engineering. Engineering combines the principles of science, mathematics and technologies. It follows the diptych: design + test “design and test”. Through engineering activities, students can develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking and get into the processes of design, test and efficiency. Designing a maze, or a ramp for cars for example, are engineering activities.

S.T.E.A.M., as we say Arts. Art, came to be added to S.T.E.M. in the last decade (Sharapan, 2012). The arts enhance creativity, ingenuity and imagination and, are inextricably linked to both mathematics from the time of ancient Greece and Egypt, and engineering, having Leonardo Da Vinci’s architectural engineering as a notable example (Chung, 2014). Exploring and experimenting with different painting tools and materials is one example.

S.T.E.A.M., as in Mathematics. Mathematics is the science that can be clearly and accurately defined in terms of content. According to the 2014 curriculum, it is stated that the student should develop “mathematical action”. Mathematical action refers to children’s ability to look for properties, relationships, abilities, identify similarities and differences, look for ways to solve and solve problems, measure distances (indirectly or directly), predict and orient themselves in space.

In summary, S.T.E.A.M. promotes the interdisciplinarity of the five subjects and aims to integrate these fields, to strengthen thinking and, more specifically, effective thinking. We must keep in mind that learning is a dynamic process that is constantly changing and we must be there to guide students to the ability to use knowledge and skills within their everyday lives.
